Into the worm's hole
Rating: 5 out of 5
Series book: Yes
Will I read the next one: Hells yeah
My heart, oh my heart. It was cut out as Raffe's wings were in chapter one of this glorious mash up of words to make sentences to make heaven on paper. Can you tell that I'm a fan yet? My only problem is how long it took me to pick up Angelfall. Here's whats going on: Penryn's sister was kidnapped after her whole family sees Raffe's wings get cut off. Penryn's solution? Team up with potentially dangerous wingless angel and walk into the lion's den to find her sister. The result? A dark and twisted, yet surprisingly funny, apocalyptic story that everyone in the world needs to read right now. Well, not now now. Wait until after I finish gushing because man, I am in love.
Lets start with the relationship between Penryn and Raffe
“I never kid about my warrior demigod status."
Can we take a moment to appreciate the perfection that is burn? Their banter was on point to say the least. When Raffe got snarky and rude, Penryn did not shy away, despite the fact he is a fearsome angel that she knows he can snap her in half. Oh no, instead she burns his ass.
The other thing I loved about their relationship was way they both went out of their way to protect the other. Even after she chained him to a rolling cabinet, even after he tried to choke her, she'll run into a room of hostile gang members for him and he instinctively shields her from the glass from a broken window. In short, I LOVE THIS RELATIONSHIP. But like all perfect relationships in YA, it is forbidden. Not Bella and Edward forbidden. No, this is worse. Angel + Human(AKA Daughter of man) = evil monster and fallen angel and unknown but definitely bad punishment for the woman.
And then there's Raffe
Has anyone made a machine that makes fictional characters real yet because I've got my eyes on a certain angel. Swoon is not a strong enough word to describe my reaction to Raffe. He breathes, my heart stops. He speaks, I scream internally. He is perfect. He's obviously trying so hard to keep Penryn away even if it means he has to be alone and as other angels repeatedly said, "Angels are not meant to be alone." Not only that but there is a moment THAT I WILL NOT SPOIL BUT LET'S JUST SAY IT WAS HEARTBREAKING that truly revealed how he felt for her and at that moment my heart broke because Omigosh. The feels were so real.
There's so much more to say but....No spoilers here! But Raffe is definitely on my top ten book boyfriends list, even if it's all kinds of forbidden.
And Penryn's family...all kinds of crazy.
Penryn's mother has paranoid schizophrenia and since meds aren't exactly in abundance during an apocalypse. Despite her mom's eccentricities, I loved her. She would periodically disappear and Penryn would be like, "I should be worried, but she's crazy enough to take care of herself." Which obviously couldn't be more true because at one point you see her with a cattle prod and the scariest gansters would back off at the sight of her. Can you imagine? This middle aged woman muttering to herself with grown men running from her? It's amazing. And hilarious.
All in all, Angelfall was one of the best books I have read since, well, ever. Not only was it realistic in the dark reality of what a apocalyptic world would be like, but it had just enough humor and forbidden romance that it was the perfect balance. If you're in a reading slump, or just haven't found a really good book to read recently, you've found the perfect book. Read it. You know you want to.
