In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Holy bleeping crap. Holy--wow. I just didn't think I'd actually be able to get into this book. But here I am seven hours and 487 pages later and I am freaking sold. I can't. I can't even. I just--wow. My thoughts aren't forming I'm so jacked up on adrenaline right now. Like, okay, picture yourself jumping off a building into complete darkness, then multiply that suspected feeling by 100. That is how freaking exciting this book was. Oh man. Okay, let me calm down so I can form a few thoughts that make sense.

What a freaking emotional roller-coaster. First you laugh, then you cry, then your scared as hell, then your laughing again, and crying, and then you just don't how to feel because your just too emotionally spent. How many authors can make you do that? Answer: You can count them on one hand. Is that not clear enough for you? Let me spell it out for you. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G Okay? Okay.

Next up, the plot. So at first your just like; is this a knock off of the hunger games? The answer to that question is no! No. First the society is completely different. Every faction is supposed to be equal and void of evil. I mean they're not, but it's a nice idea. Then when you turn sixteen, you pick a faction depending on your aptitude test results. All in all, it was original, and really enjoyable, and impossible to put down.

I felt like I actually got to know these characters. They weren't just words on a paper, they were people. I know that sounds like super cheesy, but it was nice to have characters that felt real for a change. I LOOVED Christina and Will. What really bothered me was Tris' insistence on how un-pretty and selfish she was. Like shut up. Your bleeping kick-ass! Admit it. I mean she was even more kick-ass than Katniss!

Four was amazing. He was kind of hot but cold, though. You know, he's super hot but he acts all cryptic and distant. But he was sweet too. And he was an actual person, with real life fears. *Yeah, Four is actually Tobias, that other Abnegation transfer who was supposedly abused by his dad? Yep he was abused and of his four(FOUR get it? Four fears?)fears two are from his childhood.* He was seriously into Tris, but I feel like she didn't really appreciate it enough. He also said stupid things to protect her that made her cry and he was all like "Oh sorry, I didn't think you'd flip cause your so kick-ass" and she's like "It's cool lets make out." So it wasn't the best relationship, but Four was hot and tough and amazing and wow. Perfect  imperfect relationship.

Favorite Quotes:
“Four flips the gun in this hand, presses the barrel to Peter's forehead, and clicks a bullet into place. Peter freezes with his lips parted, the yawn dead in his mouth. "Wake. Up," Four snaps. "You are holding a loaded gun, you idiot. Act like it.”

“Moths," repeats Will. "You're afraid of moths?"
"Not just a cloud of moths," she says, "like...a swarm of them. Everywhere. All those wings and legs and..." She shudders and shakes her head.
"Terrifying," Will says with mock seriousness. "That's my girl. Tough as cotton balls."
"Oh, Shut up.”

“I might be in love with you." He smiles a little. "I'm waiting until I'm sure to tell you, though.”

“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”
